Python Basics Wednesday 5-6, October 29th-November 19th

Interested in typed langauges but not sure where to start?

Our Python course is a great way to get started learning the fundamentals of typed laguages, with no prior experience necessary!

In our introductory course, students will use Python to learn basics of programming that can be applied to all languages,

Students will also write their own starter programs to apply these concepts in practice, such as a calculator or a number guessing game.

Our full day Scratch camp on Tuesday, November 4th from 9:30-3:30 is a great way to get started learning the basics of coding!

No prior experience necessary!

Campers will focus on learning Scratch, in which they will use blocks to create games, tell stories, make cool graphics and much more!

Scratch is an outstanding tool to teach logic and encourage creativity as kids learn how to combine elements of video, music and their own artwork to make interactive projects, laying the foundation for understanding the basics of coding.

The cost of the course is $90.

Congressional Partners

Each year, theCoderSchool partners with the Congressional App Challenge (CAC), a nationwide coding contest run by districts of the U.S. Congress. Meet Our Owner and GM

Charu Katyal

Hi, I am Charu Katyal and I am the General Manager and co-owner at The Coder School. Most of my work experience has been in HR and IT recruitment, and my volunteer experience is primarily in the realm of education whether it is causes that support underprivileged kids or volunteering at my daughter’s school. These arenas that are seemingly separate, blend together in The Coder School mission which is: to teach children coding in a fun, nurturing environment. Truly an intermeshing of education and HRD which can be summed up as, "Kids learning happily!" That they are, because the teaching is customized and paced according to a child’s strengths and interests.

In today's STEM focused environment, The Coder School is a perfect fit. When kids learn programming they hone many skills-logic, precision, reasoning, problem-solving, persistence and much, much more as they evolve into creative out-of-the-box thinkers. Our school lights a spark that is limited to not only coding, but one that carries over to math and science and beyond. So many of us assume we are not good in math, and it is my passion that children not borrow the same script. When kids learn to code they are learning math and science too as they organize data, break it down into smaller components, analyze, use math expressions and algorithms as they advance forward. Kathy Kilo-Peterson

My name is Kathy Kilo Peterson and I am co-owner of The Coder School, Chesterfield/Town & Country. I am a parent that is passionate about enriching the lives of children. My business partner, Charu Katyal, will be running the school on a daily basis. I will be in the background helping with community outreach. I am super excited to bring The Coder School to St. Louis. We have such a rich connection to the Founders, Hansel Lynn and Wayne Teng. Both are Silicon Valley guys that attended Washington University, returned to Silicon Valley, met and founded The Coder School. They are just as excited as we are to bring this approach of learning technology to St. Louis. What I love about teaching kids to code, is that they learn logical thinking and math while having a blast. The ability to code is a skill every child should have. The philosophy of the Coder School intertwines technology learning, critical thinking and presentation skills. These skillsets will continue to become increasingly important for our children. Do kids still need to code with AI on the horizon?

Emphatically YES! More than ever, AI will be the great equalizer, making everyone's skillset pretty similar. This is why instead of moving away from coding, kids should learn the critical thinking and logic skills of coding now. What is the best coding language to learn as a beginner?

The truth is, Scratch is amazing for a beginner at ANY AGE. If someone is truly a beginner, a platform like Scratch can allow them to create and engage much more quickly. Older kids (say 11 and up) can soon move to a language like Python or Javascript. Just remember that it takes a LOT MORE work to get Python/Javascript to do the same thing as Scratch - so the kids will need some patience. No matter what anyone tells you please DO NOT start learning with Java or C++! Those languages are too advanced to start with, and we've seen it too often - kids will give up because it's so hard! Definition of backfiring!

What is the best age to start coding?

It depends - we think the best age is the age they want to do it! Listen, there's plenty of time to *really* learn to code - there's a reason Comp Sci is a really tough college degree. The important thing in the younger years is to bring out the desire and passion to learn more - that's why at theCoderSchool we customize our projects based on the student's interests and really focus on engagement before learning.

How do I get accepted into a college computer science program?

These days, top colleges are incredibly selective. Learning to code by itself probably won't help you stand out enough. Instead, consider building a unique Coder Story. Can we help? Sure can!

What are the benefits of kids learning to code?

Children of all ages can benefit from learning coding skills, and students who get hands-on experience with computer programming go on to excel in other subjects Coding helps students gain computer proficiency and build real-world problem-solving skills. Exploring technology is essential for computer literacy. Building fundamental coding skills encourages creativity, promotes teamwork, and enhances spatial intelligence and logical thinking skills. Kids of all ages can learn computer science. For teenagers, learning how to code leads to the development of transferable skills that can be applied in future careers or workplaces.
