Hi everyone! We are Chad and Ellen Hamel, owners of theCoderSchool in
Ashburn, VA. We are so excited to bring theCoderSchool to the DC metro
area! A little about us - we live on a small farm in Loudoun County
with our two boys, a dog and lots of other farm animals! Chad is a
veterinarian and graduate of Oklahoma State University and Ellen is a
nurse with Nursing degree from the University of Virginia and Master
of Public Health from George Washington University. We have each
worked in the healthcare field for nearly 20 years and we are both
former college athletes. Throughout our careers we’ve experienced more
and more the importance of technology and its reach into a variety of
different industries, including health! For this reason, we feel it is
really important to bring the ability to code to the next generation.
Coding is not only a critical skill set for the future, but helps kids
to develop their creative, cognitive and analytic abilities, setting
them up for success in their careers and in life! We chose
theCoderSchool because we believe in its philosophy of teaching to
code through a personalized coaching approach, in a fun and supportive
environment, fostered by a family-oriented team. We hope you’ll join
our community and look forward to working with you and your child to
create an awesome learning experience! If you have any questions,
please feel free to contact us anytime at email@example.com or
Our Tech Advisor (and Code Coach)
Welcome, game developers and parents! I’m Stevens Miller (yup, my first name looks like a last name). I’m the Technical Adviser for theCoderSchool in Ashburn. I’m also the Unity game development instructor. I have a bachelor’s degree in physics from Amherst College, a master’s degree in computer science from the Stevens Institute of Technology (same name, no relation), and I’m a Unity-certified developer. Unity uses the C# (pronounced “see sharp”) programming language, which is very similar to Java. But game creation is much more than writing code. A successful game combines science, art, music, drafting, logical thinking, writing, and even acting. In 2018, video games became the most popular and the most profitable entertainment industry in the world, surpassing both movies and television. Maybe that’s because the technology has reached the point where a player can take on the role of a character in an interactive story. You no longer just watch the hero. In a game, you ARE the hero! Multi-talented, well-trained developers are what makes such games a reality. If your daughter or son wants to mix art, engineering, coding, and fun, I look forward to helping them do it. See you soon!
Meet our Mascot!
My name is Magellan, theCodingAlpaca, and I enjoy eating grass, playing with my other Alpaca friends, and of course, Coding. I hope to see you soon at our school. Until then, please ponder how I learned to code when I have hooves for feet and I hope you have an awesome day!
Are you a passionate coder? We're always looking for amazing Code Coaches®,
What is theCoderSchool? We are an after-school drop-off program for kids learning to code - a coding school! There's after-school kung fu. There's after-school music lessons, sports, art, tutoring, Chinese, you name it, it's out there. But coding for kids? We're among the first of many, and the largest in Silicon Valley with more locations on the way around the country. The future will be ever more dependent on technology so let's get our young generation ready. Learn to Code, Change the World®.
