Robotics, Taught the Code Coaching Way

Robotics at theCoderSchool is part of our Code Coaching program, and it's taught in that style. We don't sit kids in front of software and hope it teaches them. Each student works directly with a coach who adapts every lesson to their pace, skills and interests, whether that means a first line-following robot or a sensor-driven design of their own.

Your child's lessons are never one-size-fits-all, and they are never a fixed script. Robotics students get the full Code Coaching experience:

What Kids Build and Learn

Students assemble robots, then program motors and distance, touch, color and force sensors to make them move, react and solve challenges. Your coach picks the platform that fits your child's age, experience and interests, and it varies by location. Examples include:

Along the way kids practice logic, debugging, engineering thinking and teamwork, skills that carry over to Python, game development, AI and any STEM subject. Students who catch the bug can keep branching out through the Coder Tree.

Equipment

We supply the robotics kits for your child's coaching, so you don't need to buy a robot to get started. Depending on the program, your location may charge a slightly higher fee to cover the equipment. Ask your location for details.

Already have a robot at home? Bring it in. If your child has a robot they want to learn to program, their Code Coach will help them get the most out of it.

Looking for Robotics Camps?

We run those too, as a separate program from year-round coaching. Our week-long robotics camps run at about a 6:1 ratio, give campers real robots to build and program (mBot is our standard, though some locations use another robot), and typically end with a challenge such as a maze run or timed task. Camp schedules and robots vary by location.

Robotics Class FAQs

What age should kids start robotics?

We recommend robotics for kids ages 8 and up. It suits beginner and intermediate coders, and older students who are new to coding or robotics are welcome too.

Does my child need coding experience?

No. Coaches start where your child is, with block-based coding for beginners and Python as they progress.

What robots do you use?

Coaches choose the platform that fits each student. VEX IQ and LEGO SPIKE Prime are two we teach. The exact robots vary by location, so check with your nearest school.

How is this different from a typical robotics class?

Robotics at theCoderSchool is taught through Code Coaching: a 2:1 student-to-coach ratio with lessons customized to each child, weekly notes for parents, and progress tracking. Kids are never left alone with software or a fixed script.

What programming languages do students learn?

Students typically start with visual block coding and move up to Python when they are ready.

Do we need to buy a robot kit?

No. We supply the robotics kits for coaching. Depending on the program, your location may charge a slightly higher fee to cover equipment, so ask your location for details.

Can my child bring a robot they already have?

Yes. If your child has a robot at home that they want to learn to program, they can bring it to their session and their Code Coach will help.

Do you offer robotics camps?

Yes, as a separate program from our year-round coaching. Our week-long robotics camps run at about a 6:1 ratio and typically end with a challenge such as a maze run or timed task. Schedules vary by location.

Is robotics useful if my child doesn't want a career in coding?

Yes. Robotics builds logical thinking, problem solving and confidence with technology, which help in any STEM subject and career.

What is theCoderSchool? We are an after-school drop-off (and virtual) program for kids learning to code - a coding school! There's after-school kung fu. There's after-school music lessons, sports, art, tutoring, Chinese, you name it, it's out there. But coding classes for kids? Founded in 2013, we're the first of many, and the largest in Silicon Valley with more locations on the way around the country. The future will be ever more dependent on technology so let's get our young generation ready. Learn to Code, Change the World®.
