Camp Description
If you've heard of Minecraft, you probably have heard of its cousin Roblox.
In this summer camp, participants will get to create and publish their own
Roblox game to Roblox website for the world to play. Campers will spend each day building an Obby (Roblox lingo for Obstacle course) using the amazing Roblox Studio platform. Campers will learn the basics of creating games in a 3D environment. They will also learn about the programming language Lua by modifying pre-programmed blocks to suit their obstacle course needs. On Friday, parents will get to see the awesome creations of their campers.
Which Teaching Platform Is Used in Coding Camps?
Roblox Studio is a platform used by developers all over the world to create the amazing experiences seen today on Roblox. The platform will allow campers to focus on the “Game Design” aspect of game development. Instead of worrying about programming a cube or a sphere to be drawn onto the screen, campers can focus on implementing the awesome ideas from their minds and into the 3d worlds. In addition, the Lua programming language is an easy-to-read language that allows developers program unique features into their game using Roblox’s built in functions. Each camper will get to create their own Roblox account if they do not already own one (very low odds of that) that they will be able to save their work on.
What Coding Concepts and Languages Will Students Learn at Camp?
Students will learn about the fundamentals of 3D game development, and they will get to learn the basics of programming in general. Some of the concepts the campers may learn include:
Basics of programming (variables, if statements, functions, loops), all foundational concepts in computer science
Intro to of 3D modeling
A high level understanding of basic physics concepts (Velocity, Force, Angular Velocity etc…)
A high level understanding of what a Game Engine is
Familiarity with the Roblox Studio game engine
and More!
What Skill Level Is Appropriate for Roblox Camp?
Students interested in this summer camp should be good typers and familiar with the keyboard. Coding experience isn’t necessary. Those with some level of experience with Roblox Studio or other game engines are welcome to learn advanced Lua coding concepts and to obtain a deeper familiarity of Roblox Studio. If your camper is a regular Coder School student that may have learned Roblox coding in Code Coaching, be sure to check with us first before you enrolle, as sometimes this material is covered in more detail in our regular after-school Coaching sessions.
